How aligners fit into your day-to-day
What is assessed before moving teeth?
Visible alignment is only part of the diagnosis. How the upper and lower teeth meet, tooth and gum health, and the required movements also matter. An image of the expected result helps explain the plan but does not guarantee an identical biological response.
Attachments, space and complex movements
Some plans need small bonded attachments or additional procedures. Complex movements may require another orthodontic method or a combination. The choice should reflect what treatment can address, as well as how discreet the appliance looks.
Meals, cleaning and consistency
Remove aligners for meals and cleaning. Follow the prescribed wearing time and change schedule without skipping sets to speed things up. Keeping them in their case when out of your mouth helps prevent loss and damage.
Follow-up matters too
Reviews check fit and progress. If an aligner stops fitting, breaks or causes persistent discomfort, ask for advice before continuing. The retention needed to maintain the final position is assessed at the end.

01Are they completely invisible?
They are discreet but may be visible close up. Attachments and elastics can also be seen when required.
02How many hours should I wear them?
Around 20–22 hours a day is often recommended, but follow your orthodontist’s instructions. Leaving them out too long can affect the plan.
03Do I eat with them in?
No. Remove them to eat. Before reinserting them, clean your teeth and aligners as advised to avoid trapping food and sugars.
04What are attachments?
They are small raised areas of composite bonded to teeth to help particular movements. They are removed at the appropriate stage after treatment.
05Will I feel pressure when changing aligners?
Temporary pressure or sensitivity may occur. Severe pain, a persistent sore or poor fit needs advice.
06Can adults use them?
Yes, if dental and periodontal health allow. Age alone does not determine suitability.
07Will I need retainers later?
Yes. Retention is part of treatment and should follow your individual instructions to reduce subsequent tooth movement.
08How is suitability assessed?
