Implants with limited bone

Having limited bone does not answer the question on its own. Careful assessment helps establish which options are reasonable.

UNDERSTAND BEFORE DECIDING

What does it involve?

Bone can reduce after tooth loss. Implant assessment considers its height, width and relationship to anatomical structures. Some cases may involve regeneration, a sinus lift or another restorative design. Each option has limitations and risks: not everyone needs grafting, and not everyone can receive implants.

WHAT IT MAY OFFER

Care today. Smile tomorrow.

01

Assessment of available bone

02

Comparison of alternatives

03

A staged plan with clear aftercare

YOUR CASE IS UNIQUE

Is it right for you?

Assessment may help if you have been told you have limited bone or have had missing teeth for some time. General health, smoking, infection and expectations must be reviewed before deciding on surgery.

Suitability, alternatives and possible risks are always assessed during a consultation.
STEP BY STEP

A plan you can understand.

01

Anatomical study

We assess bone volume using the investigations that are indicated.

02

Options and timings

We explain whether regeneration, an adapted plan or an alternative prosthesis is appropriate.

03

Restoration and review

We allow for healing and check tissue stability.

Aftercare and points to consider

Regenerative techniques may extend treatment and cause swelling or discomfort. Success is not guaranteed. Postoperative care and follow-up are part of the plan.

UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

What is assessed when bone is limited?

Bone quantity is more than one measurement

Height, width and the area needing support matter. The position of the maxillary sinus can also influence upper-jaw planning. Two people with bone loss may therefore need different plans, even with the same number of missing teeth.

Bone regeneration and sinus lifts differ

A graft aims to increase bone support in a particular area. A sinus lift may be considered in certain back areas of the upper jaw to create space beneath the sinus membrane. These are general clinical options whose suitability requires assessment of anatomy and alternatives.

Materials and stages should be explained

Graft materials have different origins; the patient’s own bone may be used in some circumstances. Ask what is proposed and why. Grafting may take place before or alongside implant placement, depending on the defect and support available for stability.

The plan should also consider alternatives

Adding regeneration may increase treatment time and complexity. Infection or insufficient bone formation can occur. Other ways of replacing teeth, such as bridges or removable dentures, should be considered according to oral conditions before deciding.

Questions worth asking

  • Where is bone limited, and how does that affect the restoration?
  • Which material and how many stages are proposed?
  • What alternative do I have if I don't want a graft?

An examination helps clarify the options, stages and cost estimate for your case.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Your questions,
clearly answered.

Information to help you feel more at ease before your appointment.

01Is a bone graft always needed?

No. It depends on anatomy and the planned restoration. Other options are sometimes available.

02What is a sinus lift?

It is a technique to increase bone in certain back areas of the upper jaw. Individual assessment is required.

03Does a short implant avoid every need for grafting?

No. It may be an option in some cases, but is not suitable in every situation.

04How long is the wait after regeneration?

Timing depends on the technique and tissue healing. An estimate is explained before treatment.

05Can it all be done at once?

Sometimes. In other cases, separating the stages is preferable to support healing.

06What alternatives are there without surgery?

Removable dentures or bridges may be considered, depending on the teeth and tissues available.

07Is the outcome guaranteed?

No. Infection, failure to integrate and other complications are risks to discuss during consultation.

08How is suitability assessed?

This page provides general guidance. During your consultation, we review your history, examine your mouth and recommend investigations if needed. We explain the alternatives before a decision is made.

09Can I see a cost estimate before starting?

Yes. After diagnosis, we explain the proposed plan and cost estimate, including its stages and what is covered. The price depends on your needs, rather than the treatment name alone.
