Conservative dentistry restores teeth affected by decay, small fractures or wear. Depending on the extent, treatment may involve a composite filling, an inlay or another restoration. Care goes beyond repair: we also assess factors contributing to new lesions, such as frequent sugar exposure, cleaning and dry mouth.

Aftercare and points to consider
A restoration also needs maintenance. Request a check if your bite changes, pain persists or an edge breaks. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth help prevent new decay.

Repair the tooth and understand why it has been damaged
An early lesion is different from a cavity
Mineral loss can occur before a hole develops. Some early lesions can be controlled with prevention and monitoring. Once a cavity exists, restoration may be necessary. Diagnosis determines the approach, rather than the colour of a mark alone.
Filling size does not tell the whole story
Lesion depth and proximity to the pulp influence treatment. If decay reaches the inside of the tooth, a filling may not be enough. Assessment therefore considers the affected surface, symptoms and tissue condition.
Prevention continues after restoration
A filling repairs damage but does not remove the conditions that contributed to it. Sugar frequency and daily cleaning still matter. Fluoride helps protect enamel; prevention is adapted to individual risk.
Small fractures also need assessment
A chipped edge may appear purely cosmetic, but its depth and any further damage need checking. Depending on the case, a fragment may be reattached or the tooth rebuilt. If you have a fragment, ask how to bring it to the appointment and avoid household adhesives.

01Does a cavity always hurt?
No. Decay can progress without discomfort. Check-ups can identify lesions before deeper tissues are affected.
02Are all fillings the same?
No. Materials and techniques are selected according to the location, size and load of the tooth.
03What's an inlay?
An inlay is a restoration made outside the mouth and fitted to the tooth. It may be considered when more tooth structure has been lost.
04Can you fix a broken filling?
Sometimes it can be repaired; in other cases replacement is appropriate. The tooth is checked for decay, leakage or fracture.
05Is sensitivity after treatment normal?
Temporary sensitivity may occur. If it persists or worsens, a review is needed to check the seal and bite.
06How long does a restoration last?
There is no fixed time frame. It depends on size, hygiene, bite, material and habits.
07Can further decay be prevented?
Personalised prevention can reduce risk, but no restoration completely removes the possibility of new lesions.
08How is suitability assessed?
